Ok, so Petsmart's refrigerator where they keep the meal worms stopped working. I will have to get meal worms from another location, however, we can still set up your meal worm habitat so that it is all ready to go for your meal worms on Wednesday! :) (more info on what is required for the assignment on Canvas)
We will also finish watching Eternal Enemies and you will have time to write and submit your reflection paragraph.

Access on-line textbook resources
How to access the online resources
- Go to cengage.com (Links to an external site.)
- Click on "new student user"
3. Once there, add the "course or code key" ELPPPDNMPPQZMJ" & click continue
4. It will come up as Peoria Unified school district and that is ok, just click continue
5. Create your own account. Use your same school gmail account and I would use your school password, since the requirements are 1 number and 1 capitol letter.
6. Once it is created, click on "course mate"
7. In coursemate, add the Course Key
Per 4 - CM-9781111941321-0000104
Per 7 - CM-9781111941321-0000105
8. Take a screen shot of the course, once you have added the course key, put it in a google doc, share the doc with me and submit the assignment
9. Take some time to go through the site and see what is there. Specifically go to Chapter 1, and highlight and take notes on part of the text.

How do I make a graph on google sheets?
We are going to go through step by step on how to make a graph for your virtual lab today

How does competition affect population growth?
Purpose
In this investigation you will conduct an experiment and grow two species of the protozoan Paramecium, alone and together. You will then compare growth curves of the populations of each species.
Objectives:
Go through the virtual lab. Create a doc, slideshow, spreadsheet, etc for this assignment. You need to have screen shots for each part explaining what is happening in each shot, a data table with information from the experiment. Also answer the analysis questions from the journal.
At the end of your doc, you need to write a conclusion paragraph following the claim, evidence, reasoning format.

Objectives:
- Demonstrate how competition for natural resources in the environment can affect population growth.
- Explain how availability of resources, such as food, can be limiting for populations.

Upload to Canvas Day! :)
So, the Science Seminar as well as College Biology courses are now published, so when you log into Canvas (phoenixunion.instructure.com), you should be able to see both.
For now, all of your assignments for the block will be in the Science Seminar class (that may change as we move forward).
You need to submit by Friday

Project practice and meal worm work
For the first part of the block this week, I want you to complete your research and begin writing your introduction for the meal worm project. An introduction for a scientific paper serves to give the reader background information about the content of the experiment. So, for example, within the introduction portion of your final draft you should have general information about meal worms and their habitat. It can include pictures or graphics if you think that will enhance the readers understanding. Also, keep a running list of websites that you found the information and pictures from, as you will have to have a "work cited" or reference page at the end. You will eventually be designing a meal worm habitat, so also within your introduction, you should have information about what your meal worm habitat will look like. You can bring in items, or I will provide
The remainder of the block is yours to practice for your performance of the first project. Performances will take place Thursday and Friday of this week. Everyone should be ready to perform on Thursday, names will be drawn out of a hat to determine who goes first.
- a small container
- oatmeal
- bran flakes
- apples
- potatoes
- meal worms

Ecological Footprint, Canvas & time to plan project
Today we will take a few minutes to discuss your results of the eco footprint activity
Then please attempt to log into canvas (phoenixunion.instructure.com) your ID# is your log-on and your normal password should work. Please let me know if it does not.
You will have time today to work on your script or maybe even begin practicing for your project (performances are next week). Rough drafts of the script should be done by tomorrow.

Agenda for today
Agenda for today
- Short video on "What is sustainability?"
- Answer the question, "Is Yeast Alive?" (this is a more usable document than the one from last week, please transfer your information to this form)
- Time to Story-board or begin writing script for project (work on this as you are waiting to take observations on your yeast)
- if time allows, research & design a meal worm habitat (are meal worms actually worms??)

First Friday!! :)
So it is time to talk about our first project :)
As we inquired about the question "Is Yeast Alive?" you should have collected data. But, what sort of data is useful in experiments or research? How many different types of data are there?
Today we are going to go through a short data activity, and then sort examples of data into different groups.

Characteristics of Life and Plan for Success
What are the characteristics of life?
We had a discussion and came to consensus about the 5 characteristics that all living things have in common.
We also talked about the plan for success. I need the signed page back tomorrow! :)

Day two
Congratulations, we made it through the first day back! :)
Today, you will be given another problem to solve.
Each table has a complete deck of cards. Your job is to pick 25 cards from the deck and arrange them in a 5x5 grid so that each row and column add up to 31. You can change out your cards at any point if your first set isn't working. Face cards (King, Queen and Jack) are worth 10, and the Ace is worth 11.
Also, please fill out the form below. If you do not have a school appropriate gmail account, please create one.

Welcome!
In this class we do science. Most days, you will be active in your learning, have an open mind and we will go far!
Today, in groups, you will be given clues to a mystery. Your job is to communicate and solve the mystery. Good Luck!
